MAP & COMPASS - Learn how to navigate in the woods! We will cover map reading, compass use, route planning, land navigation, declination and put these skills to use outside. A classroom session will be followed by a 2-3 hour hike through the woods on trails and a great opportunity to become comfortable with your compass and a USGS topographical map. LAND NAVIGATION INTENSIVE - Land Navigation/Orienteering Intensive with Map & Compass. This three day, 24-hour course will bring you to a level of skill proficiency in use of map and compass that you have not had before. We will cover the following topics:
Professionally presented classroom sessions will be followed by the majority of the time spent outside putting the concepts you learn to use. You should bring a compass, but feel free to talk with me before the class to select an appropriate compass for you. I will provide the maps, but bring any that you may have questions about. Most of the class will be spent outside, and some at night, so bring appropriate equipment. With the class size limited to 10, you will have plenty of one-on-one time with the instructor. The cost of the course is $195.00. A non-refundable deposit of $50 is required to reserve your space in the course. The deposit is due by June 10th, and the balance of $145 is due at the beginning of the course. Lodging and meals not provided. This course is highly beneficial to search/rescue, law enforcement, military (or perspective candidates) and any others looking to begin or improve their map/compass skills. INTRODUCTION TO HUMAN TRACKING Learn some secrets of the ancient art and science of man-tracking. This workshop will introduce you to skills practiced and employed by search and rescue and other organizations to find lost or missing persons. Through tracking and natural awareness, one achieves a sense of being connected to his/her surroundings. But beware, this class will not support the misconceptions portrayed by the entertainment media. Students will work on finding tracks and learn what may occur from a search and rescue perspective when someone becomes lost. ANIMAL TRACKING I - Discover the many mysteries of the creatures that inhabit nature. This class will increase your awareness of and ability to find and interpret tracks, scats and disturbances left behind by mammals and birds. This day-long course including fieldtrip will help you better understand and appreciate the environment by learning how to identify animal families by their prints and signs. Rob looks forward to sharing his knowledge and providing you with your own tracking experiences. IHTLE — Introduction to Human Tracking for Law Enforcement - Introductory course into human tracking skills tailored for law enforcement professionals by including and expanding on SAR FTS skills with additional emphasis on footwear impression recovery for evidence and tracking unit tactics with security. This class compliments tactical tracking classes. Classes will be conducted in the classroom, outside day and night, and in any weather. SAR FTS — Search and Rescue Field Team Signcutter - Entry-level, fifty-hour course into the principles of clue awareness, clue and track finding, identifying and interpreting signs, tactics, and how these skills fit into the SAR response. Classes will be conducted in the classroom, outside day and night, and in any weather. C.A.S.T. - Clue Awareness for Search Teams. This presentation is intended for everyone to take back and deliver to their teams. This training has been designed to introduce everyone from call-out qualified to incident commander levels of understanding on how to effectively search for and manage clues. Topics covered in the take-home power point presentation and instructors manual include but are not limited to: (1) Clues, sign, tracks, (2) Negative effects on searcher awareness (3) Ways to increase searcher awareness (4) Using the senses on a search task (5) Track trap information (6) Optimizing the use of a flashlight (7) Effects of a clue on the expanding search area
